How we met the challenge

This restaurant is positioned right in the heart of Clapham, South London. “Quirky but elegant” were the key descriptive words used at the briefing stage. From our initial site visit we realised this restaurant was extremely well positioned and we would have great opportunity to create sometime really special.

Within the scheme, particular attention was aimed at lighting, furniture and interior finishes. The design included an illuminated angled glass wall in the lobby area and internal ceiling pods which direct light down to the table creating a striking visual impact from the street.

The illuminated LED artwork panels were based on a street map of the area which creates internal focal points throughout the restaurant. These panels, along with the rest of the complex and varied lighting scheme, create different moods throughout the day into the evening.

The new waiters’ stations, with glass boxes above, provide a distinct display for PizzaExpress’s wine collection. Contrasting finishes such as oak slats and light maple chairs softens the interior from the hard stainless steel finishes.

Externally, from the high street, we wanted to make a real statement and this was achieved by incorporating clever lighting to reveal the restaurant beyond the large windows. The effect is best seen at night and is deliberate in order to attract customers. Finally, a large new revolving PizzaExpress sign, in neon lights, was positioned above the restaurant.
